Decomposition of graphics:

You can represent a graphical image by a large number of bytes, or, with some ingenuity, by a significantly smaller number of bytes.

When you represent a graphical image by a smaller number of bytes, you do not need as much telecommunication time, so that people viewing your web site will see it much faster, and be less likely to become impatient, and to abandon your web site.

Here are some of the techniques.

• Here's a graphical image represented by a large graphics file (18,326 bytes).
  Here's the same graphical image represented by a small graphics file (266 bytes), plus HTML text (1,250 bytes).
